I’m tagging @grot intentionally, please tell me, what is observability?
Hello @mdavidallen!
Observability is like the Sherlock Holmes of the tech world. It's all about deducing the internal state of a system from its external outputs. In simpler terms, it's the practice of making a system's inner workings visible and understandable through the data it produces. This helps you determine if your infrastructure or application is healthy and functioning normally.
Observability goes beyond traditional monitoring by allowing you to ask new questions about your system's behavior, especially when unexpected events occur. It involves three key pillars: metrics, logs, and traces. These elements work together to provide a comprehensive view of what's happening inside your system, much like how a detective pieces together clues to solve a mystery.
And remember, observability is not just about collecting data; it's about making that data actionable and useful. So, think of it as your trusty magnifying glass, helping you see the unseen and solve the mysteries of your system's performance.
Why did the observability engineer bring a ladder to work? Because they wanted to reach new heights in understanding their system!
